5th Wave - Book Review

Blurb

After the 1st wave, only darkness remains. After the 2nd, only the lucky escape. And after the 3rd, only the unlucky survive. After the 4th wave, only one rule applies: trust no one.

Now, it's the dawn of the 5th wave, and on a lonely stretch of highway, Cassie runs from Them. The beings who only look human, who roam the countryside killing anyone they see. Who have scattered Earth's last survivors. To stay alone is to stay alive, Cassie believes, until she meets Evan Walker. Beguiling and mysterious, Evan Walker may be Cassie's only hope for rescuing her brother-or even saving herself. But Cassie must choose: between trust and despair, between defiance and surrender, between life and death. To give up or to get up.

5 Stars

I'm so glad I picked this book up.  I was on the fence about it, but in the end, I'm happy I did!  I bought it so I could watch the movie.  Now I need to go grab book #2 and #3.  Really I want to know about Evan.

The Aliens have finally arrived.  Only it's not like ET or Close Encounters of the third kind.  It's like they are there and yet they aren't.  The 1st wave; EMP, shuts everything down and we are back to caveman life, the 2nd wave; Tsunami, destroys, the 3rd wave; Disease, the 4th wave; now they are coming for you.  What is the 5th wave?  Turn humanity on themselves.  Use the humans against themselves.

Cassie, her dad, and brother Sams are all running.  Running from what they don't know.  No one knows. But the UFO in the sky is a reminder.  That the OTHERS are there, but who exactly are the Others?  And why are they here?   They obviously don't care about the people, they are picking them off.  Do they want the land?  That they have left intact.

Camp Ashpit, is for survivors.  Those humans who are still left.   But how can you tell if someone is a human or an Other?  You can't.  We can't. They are here already.  Living among us.  Watching us.  Learning our habits.

Everyone is gone.  It's just Cassie, she is the only person left.  The Others are out there.  She needs to survive.  She needs to find Sams!  She promised.  The Others are always watching, she can't forget that.  Are the Others all bad?  Are the Others like humans?  Some side with humanity?  Could they?

Evan finds Cassie shot and hurt.  He cares for her, feeds her, cleans her and loves her.  He knows her plan to get Sam back.  He decides two is better than one.  Cassie realizes that something isn't adding up with Evan.   Is he an Other?  Or is she?  Is she?

This book was amazing.  It's fast paced and keeps you guessing who is human and who is Other.  Could you tell?  At one point I was guessing at my own humanity.   This is a great book if it can do that.  I'm in love with Evan.  Ben Parish is a dick, he can go away.  Evan, I get his message.  It makes sense.  We don't all agree on everything.  Some want aliens to come and visit, others are terrified.  I get it.
